2 New UKC Champions and a RBIMBS

At the Garden State UKC club show in NJ January 22/23rd, our Yentna and her brother, Siku, each became UKC Champions!! Caesar also won Reserve Best In Multi Breed Show on Saturday afternoon. He’s catching up to his big brother (who still has a bald patch following his surgery last August …). Skye competed in the Veteran class and won Best Veteran In Show every show.

We didn’t just have Malamutes there, we took our new young sammie along and, at just 14 weeks, she won Best Novice Puppy In Show at every show!!

New Canadian Champion – Caesar

At the CKC’s United Kennel Club show in Montreal last weekend we took our 3 youngsters. Our young boy, Caesar, finished his Canadian Championship on Saturday winning WD, while Yentna whooped everybody’s behinds winning WB, BOW, BP and Best of Breed out of the 6-9 puppy class!!! Bijou won the breed on Friday and gained a few more points towards her title. Bugsy came along on Sunday to join the party & won the Breed with Jari guiding him expertly around the ring, while Bijou walked away with another WB & BOW. Another very good weekend .

UKC Gateway Nationals

On the way home from Denver, we called in at the big UKC shows held at Purina Farms, Missouri, called the Gateway Nationals. Lots of nationally ranked and high profile dogs. There was also some competition in Mals!! The facility is really GREAT!! Great camping, lovely big halls & plenty of grass & roads to exercise the dogs. Lots of fun breeds were there too – the Northern Group had about 12 breeds including Finnish Spitz, Norbottenspets, Norwegian Buhunds and Lundehunds, all good Scandinavian breeds .

So, we had a good weekend with Skye winning the breed twice following up with a Group 3 and then a Group 1. Bijou won the breed once and followed up with a Group 1, while Caesar won the breed twice but didn’t get a look-in for the groups. All very nice wins with stiff competition.

This year we drove to Denver and showed 5 dogs. Unfortunately Tycho could not be shown due to his previous surgery and massive shaving, but we showed Star (veteran sweeps), Skye (National only), Bijou, Caesar and Yentna. Yentna kicked off the week in style winning Best Junior Puppy in Sweeps at the Regional under Breeder/judge Cindy Benson. She went on to place in every class she was in and won her Futurity class under long-time breeder Bob Sturdivant. Bijou placed in the very large Bred-By class at the National and Star placed in all her classes. Caesar, as a 20 month old Special made the cut in the Regional and then Mommy (Skye) wowed us all by getting the 5th Award of Merit in the National under long-time Breeder/judge Shilon Bedford.

NY/NJ Specialty

We went to Sussex County, NJ to the NY/NJ area specialty where Yentna made her AKC show debut. And, boy did she debut!!! She won Best in Sweeps first time out (just like her grandma, Skye, had done 7 years earlier (different show) and her Mom, M, had done 3 years ago – at the same show!). Yeah Yentna !!!

4 new UKC Grand Champions!

We’ve been busy with various things and haven’t been out too much this summer. But we did go to the AKKAOA show in Carlisle where Caesar and Bijou became a Grand Champion. Then at the Garden State KC we finished Grand Championships on Skye & Donald so now we need to start work on M’s Grand title and Yentna starts her career. As a novice puppy she did very well, winning Best Novice Puppy twice.

UKC Premier Shows – Group 4 and Group 1!!!

Indiana was hot but we had a great time. Good dogs, good company and lots to do and see. We had 3 dogs entered – Skye and Caesar were in the Champion class while Tycho was in the Grand Champion class. There was a good turn out for Mals with 7 dogs in the regular classes and one altered Grand Champion. Skye won the champion class on Friday and Caesar beat his Mom on Saturday & Sunday. He just needs one more win to become our 5th Grand Champion. Tycho won the breed every day and then went on to win a Group 4 on Friday under Paul Bruneau and ended the weekend with a bang, winning a Group 1 under Richard Klatt .

UKC Top 10 Invitational

At the UKC Premier Shows and Top 10 Invitational we had Tycho & Bugsy entered in the Top 10 Competition as the #1 and #5 Malamutes for 2009, respectively. Bugsy decided to drop all his coat & so we left him home. Tycho competed with 2 other Mals and won the first round (BOB) under John Booth. This got him into the “semi-finals”. The semi-finals comprised all BOB winners competing in 5 groups randomly made up of all the breeds registered by UKC. From each of these 5 groups, 4 finalists were selected, making a “finals” lineup with 20 dogs. Our group was judged by Paul Bruneau and Tycho made the cut as a “semifinal winner”. The finals were held the next evening after the regular Premier show. The 20 finalists were announced & paraded for the audience and then, in groups of 3, judged individually by 3 different judges. Mary Happel, John Booth and (how embarrassing… can’t remember his name) were the judges. The event was remarkably similar event to the AMCA Top 20 event, except there were three rings, one for each judge, with a central “holding pen” and a 4th “holding ring” for the next group of 3. It was “black tie optional” and I even dressed up a bit! Out came the AMCA Top 20 judging outfit . It must have worked because Tycho was awarded 8th place in the Finals!! Woohoo!

Tycho wins Group 3 & 4 in Canada!

For the July 4th weekend we went to shows in Canada and caught up with some old friends. Tycho did himself proud winning a Group 3 under Mike Lanctot and a Group 4 under Mike Shoreman. Caesar also did well, winning 7 more points towards his Canadian championship. he needs just one more point to finish. He’s have a good 2010 as well .
